How I Left my Corporate Job and Found My Dream Wedding Career

Back in 2024, I was working in Recruitment, using every ounce of energy, working to the literal bone, and earning a stupid amount of money for ‘The Man’. In other words, I was nothing but a cog in the machine with a fancy laptop. After many late-night existential crises (and one too many cups of coffee), I dreamed of utilising my background and starting my own business…

Now, this wouldn’t have been my first rodeo working as a Musican. After finishing my Master’s degree in Music, I had taught singing and performed across the UK in various function bands. I’d played at weddings from time-to-time, and I LOVED it! Watching other wedding singers thrive on social media made me think, “Okay, I can totally do this…

I had years of live performance experience, a dozen weddings under my belt, and a Master’s degree in music… if I couldn’t be successful on my own in an industry I am so passionate about, then what on earth am I going to do with my life?! Proper quarter life crisis am I right!

Fed up with my high-pressure corporate job, I spent my savings on my dream and launched Vocals by Britt. I filmed my first promo video, got brand-new business cards (goodbye, 22-year-old “Vocalist, Performer, Teacher” with a hint of live-laugh-love vibes), and bought my first PA system. Then I dramatically walked out of Recruitment for a much lower-pressure office role. At this point, I still needed a full-time job, but thankfully, I found one I could literally do upside down with my eyes closed (sorry in advance to my management team if they’re reading this). This meant my evenings and weekends were all mine to build my business.

Sounds simple, right? Wrong. It took MONTHS of gruelling work and preparation to get off the starting mark. Rejection after rejection, ghosting, content that went nowhere, ghosting again… did I mention ghosting? It felt like I was shouting into the void, and the void was not impressed.

Then, finally, the first enquiry came through. Cue me doing a very unprofessional happy dance in my kitchen. After responding, the momentum started. And in April 2025, I performed at my first wedding. What can I say? It was magical. From that day, I knew this was exactly where I was meant to be. I absolutely LOVE love. Helping couples celebrate their day with the perfect soundtrack has been a dream come true. Music has always been a passion, and building a business that combines all of my favourite skills is something I will never take for granted.

I am writing this now in March 2026, with exactly one week to go until my first wedding of the year. I have spent the entirety of today making sure everything is perfect, practicing my lucky couple’s aisle song so much that my boyfriend had to go out—sorry, not sorry.

As of April 2026, I am also dropping to part-time in my day job, and I am genuinely so excited and proud of myself for creating something so special. The feedback I have received over the last 11 months has been eyewateringly immense! I can say with confidence that I have found something I love, and created something that is uniquely mine. A business I will continue to nurture and grow for years to come. I am so grateful for every single booking, enquiry, and relationship I have made—from my lovely couples, to venues, and even my ‘competitors’. The love and support within the wedding singer community in the UK is phenomenal. This community has helped me with all of my silly questions while getting my business off its feet, and I will forever be in debt to them.

I have set some pretty bold goals for 2026, and while I’m not sharing them just yet, I have made a commitment to take notes, jot down my feelings, and bring you all along with me on my journey of developing Vocals by Britt.

Let’s see where we end up…
